Unit is defectiveMarch 9, 2010 E. Perez(Mnl, Phl.) Unit is defective on arrival. The remote control does not work. Manual says it charges your iPod but it does not. I returned the item.
Great. Works as advertised. Won't blow your eardrums with volume...March 8, 2010 garbulky(Louisiana, USA) IPOD dock works with my ipod nano 3g. There is some confusion on the box which implies that an ipod 3g will not work but I think they are not talking about the ipod nano 3g but an actual 1st to 3rd gen ipod as my nano works great.
Remote is FANTASTIC and feels actually a bit simpler than using the IPOD for me.
I compared this to the altec lansing IM600 which I have used as well. The sound is better and louder on the IM600. However the IM600 did not work ipod nano 3g.
The sound quality on this is quite pleasing. The volume is adequate. I used it in my living room and my wife who is a teacher uses it for her classes (dimensions 15x15). The volume was nice and clear and could be heard all around the living room. However, it is not a party boom box and it cannot get uncomfortably loud. So volume is adequate but will never get LOUD. The bass is there but there is an obvious cut-off to prevent distortion. So you won't get low bass from this. However, you will definitely get the drum beats with no problems. Whatever bass that's not cut off is there and quite adequate. The highs are also not fantastic but they don't feel harsh. The mid-range is GREAT. Lot of detail (especially for 2 inch speakers). Please note though that those big speakers on either side of the ipod are not actually speakers but passive drivers which have no power going through them. The actual speakers are tiny and are the ones on either side. This will sound crazy but I have the sennheisser HD600 headphones and their drivers are noticeably bigger than the speakers on this. However, it doesn't seem to affect the sound quality.
I have not been able to distort these speakers. You will always be running this thing at max volume, and at that max there IS no distortion. I feel that this unit can actually play a good bit louder but it is purposely limited to decrease distortion.
The awkward looking mounts are actually a surprising star of this unit. They have really good anti-slip grips. The swivel out but do not take much room at all. Also the system is designed to lean back and if you look at it, it's done in such a way that it is very hard to topple this thing. It is very stable where you set it. Not easy to topple it foward, backward or sideways.
The buttons on the unit are nice and light up depending on the feature being used, but they are a little stiff so you have to press hard to make it work.
The rechargeable battery is GREAT. This will save you money! Minus point as it doesn't have a radio, CD player. Also another negative for no LED display.
Portability is also fantastic. The carrying case is great. The AC adapter is designed so that you can wrap the wire around it and store everything in one soft case. It's very quick to setup. It is also VERY light. I could carry this in one hand easily. My wife changes classrooms every 45 minutes so quick setup and portability is important and this thing is just designed to be RIDICULOUSLY easy to use for that function.
In short: volume is adequate. Portability is good. Very pleasing sound. I would recommend this product.
Best for the priceMarch 2, 2010 Aaron Ernst(SLC, UT) The sound is great and the wide area feature is excellent hen trying to fill multiple rooms with music. I've taken this thing camping, to bbq's, parties, and in the office. Another plus is when it is plugged into the wall it keeps your ipod charged.
Worth the time effort and moneyMarch 1, 2010 William J. Smith(Queensbury, NY) This speaker system lived up to its expectations in my view.
Sound quality and portability are great. Ease of use is excellent.
Friends who heard it asked how to get one.
I would order another if needed.
Plusses and minuses over old modelFebruary 24, 2010 Burleigh Grimes(Santa Cruz, CA) We use these speakers almost every day -- got them to replace the mm50s which we'd had for about 2 years with no complaint. The best new feature is the plug: the prongs fold in and the cord wraps around so the plug fits neatly in the little iPod dock for storage-- everything fits neatly into the bag. But the old version had a harder cover, and this is just a fabric bag, which is a little less protection in backpacks and shoulderbags. On the flip side, the worst new feature also invovles the plug: on the old version we could plug and unplug from power without any disruption in the music. On this one, there is a slight pause in the music when you plug in or take out the plug. It's okay once you get used to it, but has caused a few awkward moments. Also, the volume keys are not lighted and are flush with the unit, so if you're trying to adjust volume in the dark you have to memorize where the keys are. But the sound on this on is WAY better than the mm50s-- the surround sound is delightful and we get true sound even at higher volumes. And the remote control is better on this one-- more options and better control.
